Tour Description

Famous for containing some of the last remaining wild chimpanzees in Africa, the Mahale Mountains National Park was gazetted in 1985. It covers an area of 1613sq km and is located about 128km south of Kigoma town on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. The western boundary of the park protects an adjacent 1.6km wide strip of Lake Tanganyika’s waters. The land in and around Mahale is the traditional homeland of the Watongwe and Waholoholo tribes.

ITINERARY

You'll be picked up from your hotel in Kigoma and transfer by car to Kalilani Village where you will find your guide with a boat waiting to transfer you to Mahale. Car transfer from Kigoma town to our boat station is around 4 to 5 hours just close to Mahale Mountains where you will have picnic lunch. Then travel with our boat for 2 to 3 hours to Mahale. Arrive Mahale in the evening, take a room, enjoy the sun set and swim over Lake Tanganyika. Dinner and your overnight stay are at Mango Bandas.
After breakfasts at 8:00 am, start chimpanzee tracking in the forest. The hikes take you to the chimp’s habitation areas that are easily accessible and not strenuous. Being in good physical condition will ease the strain of walking through the jungle! Up close, observing the endangered primates is an once-in-a-lifetime experience. Meals and your overnight stay are at Mango Bandas.
Have breakfast at 7:00 am followed by a boat transfer back to Kalilani Village. You'll be picked up on arrival and driven back to Kigoma town.
